We understand how difficult it can be to manage the symptoms of menopause while going about your everyday activities and our physicians are here to help you, step by step, throughout this natural, but challenging process.

What Is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural process that marks the end of a woman’s fertility and menstruation and usually occurs in the late 40’s early 50’s. However, in certain cases, a great population of women show signs of menopause or become premenopausal in their early 40’s and even their late 50’s.

The transition to menopause begins with the perimenopause stage. Perimenopause typically occurs 8 to 10 years before menopause and lasts until the ovaries cease to release eggs. Within the last 1-2 years of perimenopause, there is a significant decrease in estrogen that continues throughout the menopause stage. Keep in mind, women still are capable of becoming pregnant during this time.

Women who are perimenopausal tend to experience the following:

  • Abnormal periods (heavier or lighter than usual)
  • Breast tenderness
  • Worsening PMS symptoms
  • Irregular periods (skipping months)

What Happens During Menopause

Menopause causes a woman’s body to produce less and less:

  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone (a hormone released by the ovaries necessary for maintaining a pregnancy)
  • Testosterone
  • Human growth hormones (HGH).

With the lack of production of these important hormones, the body cannot function properly, leaving the overall quality of life for a woman less than optimal. Menopause can be diagnosed when a woman has experienced 12 consecutive months--or one full year--without a period.

Common Menopause Symptoms

  • Night Sweats
  • Low Libido
  • Hot Flashes
  • Fatigue
  • Weight Gain
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • PMS
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibrosis

The symptoms of menopause range far and wide in women but soon, will begin to ease as the years pass and postmenopause sets in. Unfortunately, the journey doesn’t end there; postmenopausal women are at a great risk for numerous amounts of health risks including osteoporosis and heart disease due to lower levels of estrogen. Though, with the right care and health plan, the health risks during the postmenopausal stage can be managed.
